Most people rush Zanzibar: two nights here, two nights there, hours in minibuses. We think the island is best enjoyed pole pole, slowly. Stay in one place, let the days take their shape, and Nungwi will show you more than any checklist. Here’s the week we’d plan for a friend.
Land at Zanzibar airport and drive about 1 to 1.5 hours north to Nungwi. Drop your bags, jump in the pool, and walk the 7 minutes down to the beach for your first sunset. Dinner at home: ask the dadas for pilau.
Swahili word of the day: Karibu — welcome.
Slow breakfast: chapati, fruit and chai. Walk to Nungwi beach early, while the sand is cool, and watch the dhow builders shape wooden boats by hand. Swim, read, repeat. In the afternoon, visit the turtles at the Mnarani conservation pond near the lighthouse.
Word of the day: Pole pole — slowly, slowly.
Head out early by boat to snorkel the reefs of Mnemba Atoll, where the water is clear and dolphins often join the trip. Back by afternoon for a nap and a lazy evening by the pool.
Word of the day: Bahari — sea.
Take our free ride south to Kendwa, the calmest, clearest swimming water on the island. Bring a book and plan nothing. Stay for the sunset before heading home.
Word of the day: Jua — sun.
A full day out. In the morning, walk through a spice farm and taste cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla straight from the plant. In the afternoon, get lost in Stone Town’s narrow lanes and carved doors, then eat Zanzibar pizza and grilled seafood at Forodhani Gardens as the sun goes down.
Word of the day: Asante sana — thank you very much.
Walk through Nungwi village in the morning: the fish market, the mosque, children on their way to school. In the afternoon, ask the dadas what’s cooking for dinner. Evening: a sunset dhow cruise, the sky going orange and gold as the sails fill.
Word of the day: Chakula kitamu — delicious food.
Last breakfast, last swim, last walk on the sand. Promise the dadas you’ll come back. Everyone does.
Word of the day: Kwaheri — goodbye (for now).
For a week like this, you want a base that feels like home, not a resort with a wristband. A small Swahili villa gives you calm, character and local food, without giving up the beach.
At Binta House you’re a 7-minute walk from Nungwi beach, with free rides to the beach and to Kendwa, a pool in the garden, and breakfast by our dadas every morning. Choose Naila or Khadija for two, Zuhura or Fatuma for three, or Sophia and Fayza for families and friends.
